چکیده
Cystatin, a cysteine proteinase inhibitor, was isolated from chum salmon (Oncorilynch"s keta) pituitary glands by ion-exchange chromatography on Mono-Q, gel filtration on Superdex 75, and reverse-phase HPLC on an ODS fo1]owing ethanol-ammonium acetate extraction. Salmon pituitary cystatin was equipotent te chicken egg-white cystatin in the papain inhibitory assay. The cystatin consists of 111 amine acid residues with two disulfide linkages formed between 66-75 and 89-109, and has 43% identical sequences with chicken egg-white cystatin with consensus sequences of reactive sites, Cly(4), Gln-X-Val-X-Cly (48-52), and Ile(Val)-Pro-Trp (96-98).

Determination of population structure and stock composition of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in Russia determined with microsatellites
In Asia, there are two distinct types of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum). The early-maturing or “summer” chum salmon generally returns to spawn from June through August in streams bordering Kamchatka, the Sea of Okhotsk, the east coast of Sakhalin Island, and the Amur River. Later-maturing or “autumn” chum salmon generally return to spawn from September through November in streams in Ja...
متن کاملQuantifying the Behavioral Response of Spawning Chum Salmon to Elevated Discharges from Bonneville Dam, Columbia River, Usa
Chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta that spawn in main-stem habitats below Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River, USA, are periodically subjected to elevated discharges that may alter spawning behaviour. We investigated behavioural responses of spawning chum salmon to increased water velocities associated with experimental increases in tailwater elevation using acoustic telemetry and a dual-frequency ...
متن کاملThe salmon SmaI family of short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs): interspecific and intraspecific variation of the insertion of SINEs in the genomes of chum and pink salmon.
The genomes of chum salmon and pink salmon contain a family of short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs), designated the salmon SmaI family. It is restricted to these two species, a distribution that suggests that this SINE family might have been generated in their common ancestor. When insertions of the SmaI SINEs at 10 orthologous loci of these species were analyzed, however, it was foun...
متن کاملTrends in Abundance and Feeding of Chum Salmon in the Western Bering Sea
Results from surveys of the western Bering Sea and adjacent Pacific epipelagic waters, performed by TINRO-Centre are reported. Surveys of the nekton community were conducted from 1986 through 2005, annually. Information on the distribution of all chum salmon by age group, the abundance and biomass of chum salmon, and other fish in the western Bering Sea and adjacent Pacific Ocean water are repo...
متن کاملTrends in Abundance and Biological Characteristics of Chum Salmon
Chum salmon are the second most abundant salmon in the North Pacific Ocean. In the 1930s, chum salmon were abundant along the Russian coast and in British Columbia. The total catch of chum salmon was small from the late 1940s into the 1970s but increased in the 1980s, reaching historically high levels from the 1990s to the present. Ocean distribution of chum salmon is affected by sea surface te...
متن کاملSalmon in the Arctic and How They Avoid Lethal Low Temperatures
With climate change, scientists and others are interested in the future of Pacific salmon in the Arctic. Chum, pink, sockeye, coho, and chinook salmon have been encountered in the Beaufort Sea, well within Canadian Arctic waters. Chum is the only salmon species regarded as natal to the Mackenzie River watershed, although both pink and chum salmon appear to be natal to Alaska’s North Slope river...
